Kiddos

Okay, I know several of you have children out there. I also know that several of you have children around you. I have a question... is it normal for a two year old to be obsessed with me checking my blood sugar??

One of my closest friends and my godson have recently moved in with me. He just turned 2 in July. He doesn't have a lot of vocabulary yet, but I have noticed that every single time I get out my meter to check my blood sugar, he stops whatever he's doing and rushes to watch me. He stands in front of me and stares. And the last time he watched me, he stuck a finger out for me.

I had to laugh. But I told him he didn't want me to do that to him.

But, is it normal? Since I started taking majorly good care of myself and since I started insulin pumping, I haven't been around a lot of young children. I've had children that are around 5 or 6 ask me questions (that's the age I teach Sunday School), but never had a child as young as my godson watching me like he does.

So, that's my question? Does it happen a lot with you guys?

Yes, it's normal! Kids aren't used to seeing adults (yes, you ARE an adult! ;) bleed on purpose and the fact that you are bleeding is a FASCINATING cause and effect lesson for a 2-year-old. Right around that age I started letting my daughter press the button on my finger sticker and you should have seen her face light up! (little sado-masochist...)

Yes, my daughter who is 4 still like to watch everytime. When I was home with her for the summer that was her watching me 8+ times a day! She will even announce to anyone listening that is what I have to do before I can eat. She's a little diabetes spoke woman.

My twins are 15 months old and although they're not 2 yet, they are so curious when I test my sugar. They run towards me squeeling and want to watch. I don't want them to touch any of the stuff so I get it out of their reach and they fall on the floor crying like I've just ruined their day lol

My daughter learned about numbers when I was first diagnosed from my meter. I got a strange call from her 1st grade teacher. My dd had told her that 200 meant you had to go for a walk and 40 meant that you went to the hospital!

Well yeah -- it's a weird thing that you do that no one else does, and he's excited to watch you do it!

My 3-year-old nephew likes to push the button on the stabber, and every time I see him he asks me if I brought one for him.

just stumbled upon your blog...
I have a 5 year old with Type 1, his little brother is 2 and is fascinated with his bro's diabetes stuff. He often wants his finger pricked too. A couple weeks ago, my 5yo was actually pricking my 2yo and drawing blood! No care in the world, totally fascinated! On days when I am concerned about my youngest drinking too much, etc, I have tested him. Little kiddos are so interested in all the details of life and absorb everything!! Lots of fun!
